THE UNIQUE EPHEMERAL MUDFLAT WORLD from the series "Filled Emptiness unique worlds"

                                           Two children on the mudflat

In 2015, I joyfully travelled regularly to Zeeland, to the giant high dykes along the Western Scheldt. Thus I picked day and hour and saved myself the 100km distant trip to the sea. The constantly ebbing and flowing water , flowing in and out to sea, modelled different landscapes every day : the wadden world, unrecognisably different, every ebb and flow swaying, freshly created, never repeated, never the same, always a tad different after the water receded for 6 hours. Gone, with then raging masses of water flooding everything again, New grass islands reappearing each time as soon as the water recedes. Far more captivating than the sea, always varied , a vast island plain of green strips , scooping up bright green grassy hills with blue water swirls around them and moorhens and chickadees on quick feet, and clads of silverbirds flying in formation from left to right diving above the newly emerged landscape.

Their shrill sound blows rhythmic jazz into your ears.

It captivated me, the distant strip of water with dark background, the channel for ocean-going ships that must seek their passage to Antwerp past green and red beacons.

So near giant ships as if sailing through fields: fascinating. Along with this came to me the lust to capture that strange landscape, unique nature, not susceptible to stereotypes, exceptional, fascinating always changing. For children after the retreat of the water, a playground where shells and sea creatures can be sought and wet sand bears the feet. A channel, an infinite vista, curling grass mudflats and a straight channel with the occasional giant ship, strange opal skies and purplish wet sand.

There I regularly drew, sketched with my friend, another artist, and watched the children play in sunlight on the hobbled beach.

These eight images bear witness to that. They epitomise a constantly changing world.

But because of corona, my trip to Zeeland ( 40km) another country was suddenly forbidden. The border closed and my world became inaccessible.

I could only seek feral forests in my area. Hopefully soon my world will open up again after years of isolation and lack of a moving , shining horizon.

These are unique tidal worlds that I captured in 2015, symbols of a world that constantly comes and disappears.
