THE WALK a video from the series "Virtual Worlds a diary"
The calling of the water and the birds
For Gabriëlla reminiscence is an ocean filled with inspiration, a world next to the real world, another virtual world. Gabriëlla: “Virtual worlds are not perfect, it consists of free forms, in a free style. Sometimes they look a bit lumpy, but that’s part of their charm. Like the brutal work of Basquiat.”
The series are called the walk because it’s mostly inspired by the walks she did and does with her husband Wil. He has to walk daily because of health reasons. Gabriëlla turns those walks into something positive. When she arrives home, after a walk, she paints what she saw, thought and felt during the walk. Close to their home in the region of Sint-Niklaas there’s 2 large ponds, surrounded by colourful nature, reflections, fish, cormorants. In the winter the ponds are partly frozen, another magic effect.
Also rain and wind can inspire. Deafening murmur, water on your feet, birds that float on the thermics. In Belgium the weather switches easily, temperature can drop 15 degrees in a split second. It’s never the same. We used to live in the Caribbean were it was mostly 30°, day and night. Or there is Bretagne in France. You have to go all the way to Tasmania or Hawaii to see the same wild nature. Original flowers, dunes, sculptures made by the sea. Fierce beauty. But most paintings are made in the neighborhood. Always with good company from her husband or local animals.
Gabriëlla sometimes paints at the shore of the Westerschelde, where large sandy areas become flooded pretty fast by the upcoming water. “That’s the moment you can hear the countless shells click.”
