CHILDREN IN WAR (02)

Even under the worst condition you are a child, that wants to play.

This can lead to orphans, displaced persons, and hidden children who are often left vulnerable.

Currently, approximately 473 million children live in conflict zones, which is more than one in six children worldwide. The consequences of war are devastating for children, as evidenced by the stories of children from countries such as Burundi, Iraq and Eritrea, who are trying to overcome their experiences of war. The war in Ukraine is also having a devastating impact on children, who are often fleeing with their families. Organisations emphasise that children are always innocent in war situations and call for respect for international humanitarian law.

Children are particularly vulnerable in war situations. They are more likely to suffer death, injury, displacement and psychological trauma as a result of violations of international law, including their recruitment by armed groups and attacks on essential facilities such as schools and hospitals.
In times of war, abandoned children face various forms of separation, such as the death of their parents, forced evacuation or being abandoned by their families due to poverty and conflict. This can lead to orphans, displaced persons and hidden children who are often vulnerable. Efforts to help these children include evacuation programmes, international adoption and the work of organisations such as UNICEF, which provide support and care.
