REFUGEES (02)
BETWEEN HOPE AND DESTRUCTION
The number of refugees has always been high. In the past, it was called mass migration and perhaps did not involve as much violence? That is just a guess. Or is it? In our century, there is a movement of people all over the world, there is the possibility to travel, even over long distances, which brings with it many difficulties. Newcomers are not always welcome in the safe environment they want to go to. They are often chased away, and war breaks out, as we are now seeing in Ukraine. Humanity is living in dramatic times. The displacements are enormous and painful. Goya dealt with this 200 years ago and captured the horrors in his work. In the meantime, nothing has improved, only worsened and on a larger scale. Should this be the case in a world with so many resources and an increased sense of responsibility?
As a result of this awareness, people want a better future. Thanks to the internet, they can see the situation in other countries. They are no longer misinformed, but with some effort, they are better informed. They want to escape oppression. This causes unrest. Often, it is simply the hope for a better life, the dream that pushes them away from the unlivable.
The images depicted in these paintings appeared constantly in newspapers and magazines and form the visual material of our time, the 21st-century revolts and mass migrations.
